This page is all about observations of comets over the years and the ensuing photographs.

P/Halley 1986

Comet Halley - poor but visible

This image is the only one I managed to take of Halley during my 'O' level Astronomy year at Rossall. This photo was taken using the 8" f/6 Newtonian piggy-backed as a camera on the back of the 6" Cooke. the camera was used at prime focus for 2 minutes onto Ilford FP4 film.

Comet Hale-Bopp in Pictures
Image Location/Date Exposure Comments
Hale-Bopp, wide-field piggy back exposure

This image was taken by an OM1 piggybacked on the side of the Vixen SP-102 while tracking. The image is not guided, the tracking alignment is sufficient for this length of exposure at this short focal length.

Hale-Bopp, wide-field piggy back exposure

Short exposure at prime focus of the Vixen SP-102 refractor, showing the colour and structure close to the nucleus.

Hale-Bopp, wide-field piggy back exposure

This photograph shows more detail at the expense of the colour data. The two tails at the nucleus are quite clear.
